Earthquake Strikes Delhi-NCR: Shakes felt over North India
New Delhi: Many people hurried from their homes after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Delhi-NCR this morning. The National Centre for Seismology claims that the epicenter of the earthquake was Delhi, where tremors were felt across north India. The depth of the earthquake was only five kilometers.
There are not any reports of casualties or injuries right now.
In its statement, the Delhi Police advised people to remain safe and to remember to phone the emergency helpline, 112, should an emergency strike. The cops said, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!”
Strong shakes from the earthquake caused high-rise building occupants in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad to swiftly flee.
One traveler waiting for his train at New Delhi railway station told ANI about his experience: “It felt like a train had crashed or a bridge had collapsed. Everyone dashed out from the waiting lounge. It was like something had crumbled or a bridge had given way.
Living in Ghaziabad, another person related the experience and said the shakes were unlike anything he had ever encountered. The earthquakes were really severe. One felt as though a train was passing close by. Everything was trembling. Before this, I never experienced it. He said the entire structure was trembling.
Living in West Delhi, Naresh Kumar said he had never felt such strong shaking.
“Although it lasted for a small period, the intensity was high,” another passenger at New Delhi railway station said. It was like a train arriving at tremendous speed.
Anish, a station vendor, responded, “Everyone nearby began screaming when my payment counter started shaking. It was forceful. Customers started screaming as everything shook.
Based on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) seismic zonation map, Delhi falls in a high seismic zone (Zone IV), so it is prone to earthquakes. Authorities are exhorting people to remain vigilant and follow the guidelines.
